On behalf of Infranord, Railcare has carried out a ballast replacement at Erikstad station, south of Mellerud in Dalsland. The work was done to improve track geometry on a section where mud in the track superstructure had affected the track’s stability.
“There are a lot of cables in the area, which places high demands on how the work is carried out. Railcare’s method is a good solution there because it minimises the risk of damaging existing infrastructure. Together with the large amounts of mud, this made the assignment particularly challenging, but the result was very good,” says Conny Karlsson, work supervisor at Infranord.
The work was carried out over three intensive days. Using Railcare’s Railvac and Ballast Feeder, old ballast and mud were removed while geotextile and new ballast were added. In total, about 170 metres of track were treated.
“One of the advantages of the method is that the work can be done without removing rails or sleepers. That means shorter production time and less impact on the existing installation than more extensive track work,” says Per Nilsson, project manager at Railcare.
With the work at Erikstad completed, track conditions have improved and the installation now has a more robust foundation for continued traffic.
